Our hardwood is responsibly harvested here in the USA from private sustainable forests. It is cured in-house at the O'Hair facility in Texas with a months-long multi-stage process for just the right balance of strength and moisture content. It is then prepped and bonded using a special book-matched process for strength and beauty. It is then milled, sanded, assembled and finished – and our shutters are built-to-order and not just pulled off some warehouse shelf.

white poplar 
Our best-selling species is poplar. With a medium grain and a light tone, it offers a balance of strength and resilience, It stains beautifully and is great with painted finishes as well.
satin walnut
(sweet gum)
Sweet gum (also known as satin walnut) has a gentle grain and is a European favorite. In fact, it is was the wood of choice for the first class compartments on the famed Orient Express.
cypress
Cypress has a slightly warm tone, and a flowing grain with a range of variations. While a conifer it is actually harder than poplar and is an excellent choice for natural or stained finishes.
knotty alder
Knotty alder is a conifer with a light, warm hue and a distinctive character featuring an irregular knot pattern to make it a very interesting choice. It is great for stains as well as a clear finish.

We only offer the real thing – solid, bookmatched American hardwood from O'Hair Shutters™. O'Hair does not import cheap exotic laminate hardwood and glue it to a plywood core and they certainly do not take printed plastic and glue it to flimsy particleboard blanks. Frankly, if other manufacturers used solid hardwood like we do, their shutters would cost two to three times as much as ours. The ideal solution for beauty and variety is to use a representative range of solid hardwood and a range of carefully selected stains rather than a half-dozen species of thin veneer.
